10 Today = 10 Phrasal verbs with Make. Read the story, it is easier to remember them.

David didn´t want to participate in the seminar so he made up ( invented) an excuse. Instead of going to Uni he made for ( went in the direction of) his local cafe. On the wall he saw new types of coffee available but he could not make out ( read, understand) what they were so he asked the male barrister ( specialist in making coffee) to read them out  and explain them to him. The cup of coffee arrived but unfortunately the barrister accidentally slipped on the floor and the freshly made coffee went all over David´s clothes. He made for the bathroom and when he came back the manager gave him a free breakfast  to make up for ( to compensate) the episode. David looked at his takeaway continental breakfast and, being a bit artistic, he took the packaging and made it into ( convert, use it in another way) a box in order to take it outside and sit on a bench  in the garden to eat it. He saw an advert  but did not know what to make of ( interpret the meaning of) the apparent special offer. Was it real or just another rip-off ? His cellphone rang. It was his sister, phoning from her hotel, he guessed, to make up ( reconciliate) after they had an awful argument about whose turn it was to have the shared car. Stressed out, she decided to take a break  and had made off with the car  (leave with the intention to escape from sth) for Rye, her favorite village. When she arrived at the hotel she saw  the bathroom had not been cleaned properly so she took the notice  "Please make up the  room" (clean, tidy, make the bed, etc ) and hung it on the door.Consequently she mentioned this fact to David saying "Can you believe it, the room had not been made up. I could not even get ready and get made up (put on makeup) to go out!" David was not at all interested; he just wanted to know when he would have the car back. After all, it was his turn. She apologized and said he could have the car for the next two weekends to make up for not having it this weekend. He agreed to that, hung up and enjoyed the rest of his breakfast.
