about money
David was
at university and with a low income had to go without many
things ( arreglárselas, pasar sin ello). Every month he
put 50€ aside for electricity (
save for a purpose) so that he never ran out of (quedarse
sin ) central heating: actually, he paid for it via
a meter in the rented room. He had to get by on 800€ a
month ( survive on , cope with) and as a result he put up with (
tolerate) all sorts of discomforts like having to shop on Saturday evening,
just before closing time, when the supermarkets brought
down the prices ( lower). He could also count on
discounts by reading the local shops´
ads and shopping around ( buy after
comparing prices andar a la caza y captura). What he liked most was when brands
were promoting products and gave away freebies (give
without cost = regalar, obsequiar). He
took full advantage of that.
